I'm a stylist just trying to give some wardrobe help to the fellas
12. A Cashmere sweater
Why? Because I fricken said so. That and it’s cashmere. Ok, let me explain something to you. Cashmere is one of the best fabrics and people love to feel wonderful material. You put that on and you have a lot of people feeling your sweater and there is a conversation starter. Also find a really fantastic color. This is imperative and will give that wardrobe your building a little panache. Why is this a staple? Because just based on what we have already, it fits in beautifully. It can go over the white button down with either the jeans or the grey slacks. V-neck and crew neck are both preferable and can give you that punch of color. Not bad, huh?
13. A thick sweater or cardigan
Oh do I love knitwear. And yes it needs to fit close to the body like a glove….or a well fitting sweater. Sorry, the jokes aren’t all gonna be good. This is a great layering piece and can be worn under a jacket or just by itself. Can’t you just feel a potato joke in there some where. I don’t know the parts are all there, you make something out of it.
14. One black belt and one brown belt
This I’m going to put into one and should be matched to whatever shoes you’re wearing. Brown with brown and black with black. If you don’t want to buy two, then a simple reversible leather belt should be just fine if you’re feeling thrifty. The thing I caution you about is the hardware on the belt matches the rest of your hardware like tie pins and whatnot. You’ll want to make sure its all the same type. I’ll also mention that there is a difference between a dress belt and a casual belt. You can tell by the type of leather which will be a bit more raw for the casual as well as the hardware a little more rough. Wear them appropriately.
15. A few decent silk woven ties.
This one is simple but requires a little time. You have a suit and a blazer you can dress up. Most anything can go with these items and the white shirt. But you may want to later with the sweaters as well. So choose colors that could go with those sweaters as well. If you’re not to confident in color choices just keep it simple. If you’re feeling adventurous, go nuts. It’s supposed to be fun, after all. Also keep in mind your shirt color. For a classic look go monochromatic. But if you’re feeling bold, well it’s contrasting colors for you my friend.
16. A casual jacket
This is really more of a light weight jacket for fall to put on. This could be leather or a great wool and should be fairly close to the body. What do I prefer, you ask? Why a classic double breasted navy colored Pea coat. Oh yeah. With the jeans rolled up and those brogue style boots with a scarf? BAM!! Love that look. What? So I have a penchant for a vintage look. It’s very on trend these days to mix a little vintage with modern. You can even go to the Navy surplus store and get a real one. Hell, it’s made to go through war, so it should last through winter. The main thing is that you find something that fits. Keep the colors neutral to balance whatever color you choose to wear underneath.
17. A good bag.
This one is also up to you. it could be a messenger bag or satchel or even a duffel bag but you might need to bring things with you. What? it could happen. I refer you to George Carlins bit about stuff. You gotta take stuff with you. But there’s no reason to be a schlub about it. A decent bag is that finishing touch for the outfit. I’m thinking leather or a decent canvas.
Alright Chief! There you go. Now let’s take a look in that closet of yours and see how it compares. You might notice you already have a few of those things. Does it fit? Outstanding!! I love it. Are you missing a few things? Well, start saving and get a little bit at a time. You might also notice some of those staples don’t fit. Get new ones or get tailoring. Fit is tantamount.
